Aistialiherkkyys tarkoittaa tilannetta, jossa ihmisen keskushermosto ei aisti tarpeeksi voimakkaasti saadakseen riittävästi aistimuksia. Ihminen kokee tällöin tarvetta toimia tavalla, joka johtaa aistimusten kokemiseen. Hän voi siksi esimerkiksi painella, puristella tai jopa lyödä itseään.[1]


Aistialiherkkyyttä esiintyy etenkin autisteilla. Pienellä osalla autistilapsia on todettu, että heidän hermostonsa reagoi poikkeuksellisen vaimeasti ulkoisiin ärsykkeisiin[2]. Näillä korkean ärsykekynnyksen lapsilla esiintyy taipumusta itseään vahingoittavaan käytökseen.[3] Tutkijat epäilevät, että hermoston aliherkkyys saattaa johtua mantelitumakkeen ja ohimolohkojen epänormaalista toiminnasta.[4]


Hyvin voimakkaasta aistialiherkkyydestä kärsivän on hyvä itse tunnistaa oma tilansa, koska jotkut tilanteet voivat olla vaarallisia. Jos ei aisti esimerkiksi kuumuutta, ei osaa vähentää vaatteita tai hakeutua varjoon, jolloin pahimmillaan seuraa nestehukka. Jos ei tunne kipua, ei osaa hakeutua hoitoon tai pois kipua aiheuttavasta tilanteesta.
