Drifting on Japanissa alkunsa saanut autoharrastuksen muoto. Driftingin idea on ajaa sivuluisussa mahdollisimman suuressa kulmassa koko radan leveyttä hyödyntäen niin suurella nopeudella kuin mahdollista. Suomessa driftingissä on kilpailtu vuodesta 2006.


Drifting sai alkunsa Japanissa. Japanilainen kilpa-kuljettaja Kunimitsu Takahashi omasi 70-luvulla todella aggressiivisen ajotavan, jossa hän pyrki viemään auton ylikovaa mutkaan, joka puolestaan johti yliohjautumiseen minkä Takahashi piti yllä mutkan ajan. Takahashin suoritteiden innoittamana Japanin mutkaisilla vuoristoteillä ajetut laittomat Touge-kilpailut alkoivat matkia kyseistä ajotapaa. Tuolloin driftingiä ei kuitenkaan pidetty itsenäisenä kilpailulajina.


Nykymuodossa tunnetuksi kilpailulajiksi drifting muodostui vasta 2000-luvulla, kun Japanin ensimmäinen D1GP järjestettiin vuonna 2001. Tätä ennen kilpailut olivat keskittyneet yksilösuoritteisiin, kun D1GP toi mukaan pariajofinaalit, tandem-vaiheen. Samalla myös tuomarointiin kirjoitettiin selkeät kriteerit ja lajia voitiin alkaa pitämään vakavasti otettavana moottoriurheilun muotona. Lajina drifting rantautui Suomeen vuonna 2006. Vuonna 2011 AKK Motorsport tunnusti lajin virallisesti myöntämällä sille trophy-arvon. Vuodesta 2011 laji on omannut SM-arvon.[1][2][3]


Suomessa järjestetään drifting-kilpailuja muun muassa FPDA:n ja Radalle.com-tapahtumissa.
